According to scientists, it is certain that in the coming years it will become more and more apparent that climate change is a serious problem. The effects of this phenomenon in Poland are mostly negative (listed in the State Environmental Policy 2030, i.e. a document focusing on the next decade). For example, these are, among others droughts that reduce yields, interruptions or shortages in water supplies, extreme weather events – such as high winds, torrential flooding, and heatwaves that negatively affect human organisms. To protect ourselves from the consequences of a climate catastrophe, we – as mankind – must limit global warming to 2 °C and try to keep it at 1.5 °C. Therefore, every person and every enterprise must strive to achieve climate neutrality by reducing carbon dioxide emissions, including thanks to investments in renewable energy sources or sustainable production and consumption. Therefore, when thinking about the future of our company, we are already striving for climate neutrality and sustainable development. In the coming years, we will continue the assumptions of the "Environmental Policy of Agora S.A." and implement new solutions to the goals we have set for ourselves in the CSR strategy for 2021-2022.

The "Environmental policy of Agora S.A." is a document that presents our approach to managing environmental issues and applies to all employees and associates of our company.

One of the key goals for 2022 is the continuation the update of the "Environmental Policy" and the creation of the "Environmental and Climate Policy of Agora S.A." on its basis. It is to contain information on actions for climate mitigation, in particular: target values of greenhouse gas emissions along with the definition of how these values correspond to the target national and international values, including the Paris Agreement and the recommendations of Implementing the Recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD).

GOALS FOR 2021:

Goal: Modernization of the ventilation devices (goal postponed from 2020 due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic), including ventilation cabinets, aiming to bring energy savings of up to 400MWh per year.

Last year, in order to optimize energy consumption, several parallel projects were carried out in Agora's headquarters at Czerska street in Warsaw, which, while reducing the negative impact on the natural environment, also have a positive effect on the comfort of people working in the office.

 The first one was the replacement of fans in the cabinets air-conditioning the surfaces of the building. From 2022, this change is to bring about a multiple reduction in electricity consumption (400MWh) each year and a related reduction in greenhouse gas emissions (by approx. 280 Mg CO2e per year).

The fan replacement project has opened a way to the modification of the BMS (Building Management System), the aim of which is to manage ventilation, air conditioning and heating systems in such a way as to precisely adapt to the needs of users working in a given zone of the building. The system is to analyze air quality, including temperature, humidity and carbon dioxide level in order to provide air of a quality that ensures appropriate working conditions, depending on the number of people present in a given zone of the building. At the same time, it will reduce the demand for electricity, thermal energy and cooling and will reduce the negative impact on the natural environment. The BMS modernization project is in the test pilot phase, the purpose of which is to check in a part of the building whether the project meets the assumed requirements. After the positive effects of the pilot project are achieved - in 2022 this project is planned to be implemented in stages throughout the building in order to minimize the impact of the works on the functioning of the building and the people working in it.

The third project carried out in Agora was a modernization of the heat substation, which was completed in autumn 2021. The project was aimed at replacing key components and increasing the energy efficiency of the heating system.

Goal: Actions aimed at reducing water consumption – continuation of the replacement of taps operating on the photocell in the Warsaw headquarters of Agora S.A.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the transition of a large part of the company's team to remote work, the project of replacing the taps was not implemented. The implementation of this task will be continued in 2022.

Goal: Actions to reduce energy consumption in individual cinemas.

  • Changing light sources to energy-saving

Helios cinemas do not use standard fluorescent and incandescent light sources. LED strips are the light source in all luminaires.

  • Installation of twilight clocks in outdoor advertising

All external logos located on the roofs and facades of the gallery buildings in which the Helios cinemas operate, have a twilight clock that starts and illuminates the logotype at dusk and turns off the backlight with dawn.

  • Installation of motion detectors in internal lighting fixtures

Motion detectors are installed in each newly constructed cinema (starting from 2016) within the following areas: warehouse, office, social and in internal corridors. They are also successively introduced in cinemas established before 2016.                          

  • Improving the operating parameters of air handling units by installing CO2 sensors and temperature sensors

The CO2 concentration and temperature sensors, installed at two points in each cinema screening rooms, transmit information about the real thermal conditions in the room at intervals (from 2 to 15 minutes). On this basis, the optimal operating parameters of the ventilation and air-conditioning devices are selected, ensuring both comfort in the room and saving electricity. At the end of 2021, 28 sensors were installed in 4 cinemas (Kielce, Krosno, Przemyśl, Ostrów). Sensors have become a functional standard in a cinema network and will be installed in every new facility.

  • Installation of network analyzers

In 2021, network analyzers were installed in 20 cinemas (with a direct contract for the purchase of electricity) that calculate the parameters and profile of electricity consumption by a given facility. In total, these devices are installed in 29 cinemas. Network analyzers allow (at intervals of up to 2 minutes) to check the energy consumed in a given cinema, to counteract breakdowns and quickly remove them, and to precisely select the ordered powers.

  • Implementation of the automatic lamp switch-off system for cinema projectors

In 2021 Helios cinemas introduced a system that automatically turns off the lamp from the cinema projector when there are no viewers at the screening. As a result, it was possible to both reduce electricity consumption and extend the lamp life for the projector (the average lamp life is 1000 h).

  • Implementation and updating of the automatic control system for ventilation and air-conditioning units

In 2021 the automatic control system for ventilation and air-conditioning units was updated in correlation with the number of tickets sold in a given hall, which allows for the optimization of electricity consumption.

Goal: Implementation of solutions conducive to savings in water consumption                                                                                                       

  • Installation of aerators in taps

From 2021 all wash basin faucets in the toilets of the Helios cinema network are equipped with aerators.

  • Replacement of internal parts of plumbing installations (e.g. float valves in cisterns)

The internal elements of water and sewage devices are replaced periodically, e.g. flushing cisterns, siphons, etc. This action prevents numerous and frequent breakdowns, thus saving water consumption.

Goal: Implementation of solutions for powering cinemas from renewable energy sources (photovoltaics)

Helios conducts detailed technical arrangements related to the possibility of installing photovoltaic panels in the first locations. The slowdown of the process is mainly due to external conditions, in particular, it is related to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in both the closure of cinemas and limited availability of financing for the purchase of photovoltaic solutions. The most likely solution in this area seems to be the implementation of the project based on cooperation with a selected photovoltaic company as part of mutual services (barter).

Goal: Ensuring complete recycling of waste

This goal was partially achieved by the elimination of paper trays. Activities ensuring the implementation of this goal will also be fully implemented in 2022.

Pasibus started cooperation with Zero Waste and Ekykll companies. Activities to achieve this goal will be continued in 2022.

Pasibus started cooperation with Zero Waste and Ekykll companies. Activities to achieve this goal will be continued in 2022.

Goal: Reducing contamination from frying and other production processes

Due to the difficult situation on the catering market caused by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the implementation of this goal was postponed to 2022.

Goal: Further development of pro-ecological projects in the spirit of smart city in Polish cities, including promotion of smart and eco solutions among city authorities and residents

AMS consistently implements the strategy of co-creating smart cities and, from 2018 introduces furniture arranged in the urban space to combine advertising solutions with the spirit of ecology. AMS successfully promotes its ecological solutions among city authorities and residents. In 2021, AMS received the Carbon Footprint Challenge Award for green bus stops, ECO solar poles, ECO Backlights and other activities contributing to the reduction of its carbon footprint.

Goal: Development of digital panels in Citylight and Cityscreen formats

AMS Digital offers reaching recipients through over 4,000 points of contact, incliding those at bus stops – thanks to Digital Citylight panels and at key intersections thanks to Digital Cityscreen panels. In 2021, AMS expanded its digital media system by 56 panels from the Digital Citylight category and 1 from the Digital Cityscreen category.

Goal: Building another eco-bus stop with green sedum roofs and panels protected against collisions with birds

AMS’ ECO-bus stops are nature-based solutions that are extremely important for urban infrastructure, inspired by nature, which are also profitable (economically efficient), provide ecological, economic and social benefits, and support adaptation to climate change. They look natural and introduce greenery into the urban space in places where it would be practically impossible otherwise. The windshields of the stops were covered with dots to make them visible to the birds and to prevent their collisions with the panels. The formula used was selected on the basis of numerous studies and consultations. On the other hand, the green system on the roofs of stops improves the city's microclimate, points to environmental protection in urban agglomerations and enables brands to promote themselves as part of corporate social responsibility.

The entire system of AMS’ green bus stops, installed in five cities, already allows to save 5100 liters of water collected during each rainfall. At the same time, it is responsible for the reduction of 245 kg of CO2 in the atmosphere per year and reduces the dustiness of the air around each stop by 15-20%. In 2021, AMS expanded the system of green bus stops by another 23 (20 in Warsaw, 2 in Kraków and 1 in Szczecin).

Goal: Continuation of the replacement of standard light sources (lighting of advertising panels) with energy-saving ones in LED technology

In 2021, AMS replaced standard light sources on 78 panels with energy-saving LED light sources with a total power of 9.4 kW instead of the previous 31.4 kW.

The light sources were replaced in:

  • 35 Billboard 18 panels;
  • 26 Citylight panels;
  • 5 Backlight panels;
  • 6 Superboard panels;
  • 6 Frontlight panels.

The company also built another advertising pole powered by photovoltaic cells with a capacity of 460 kWp and a pilot photovoltaic installation on the roof of a bus stop in Krak,ow with a capacity of 1410 kWp.

Additionally, since January 2021 AMS has the EKO Biznes certificate confirming that the energy purchased by the company comes from low-emission sources.

Goal: Promoting the eco offer on AMS’ panels among customers

Advertising on the AMS’ ECO-bus stops is an offer for advertisers who want to have a real impact on the environment and create new oases of greenery in the city. It is also a great opportunity to promote for brands who are close to the idea of sustainable development and protection of the planet. AMS's unique ECO offer includes: ECO bus stop system with sedum roofs in five cities, ECO poles – the largest network of poles powered by solar energy in Poland, ECO Busback – city advertising in motion on zero- and low-emission public transport vehicles and ECO Backlight – set pro-ecological solutions, which are, among others, reduction of light smog and ecologically certified printing of advertising materials.

Goal: Increasing the volume of non-process plates to approx. 40%

The volume target of non-process plates in 2021 has been achieved. The share of these plates in production increased by more than the assumed value and finally amounted to 48%.

Increasing the share of the volume of unprecedented plates has a positive impact on the environment, as it translates into lower water consumption in the printing process than in the case of using classic plates.

Goal: Maintaining the consumption of electricity, gas and water at the planned level

Assumptions regarding the level of utilities consumption were not sustained due to the increase in the volume of heatset production in the fourth quarter of 2021.

As a result of the advancing climate change, Agora's media and brands implemented dozens of initiatives for the environment in 2021, including through social campaigns, new business initiatives or partnerships. Detailed information on all pro-environmental activities undertaken by the Agora Group during this time of year can be found at www.agora.pl/responsible-business.

Gazeta Wyborcza, inspired by the COP26 climate summit held at the turn of October and November 2021, announced the Climate Declaration, in which it declared an even greater commitment to protect the climate and the environment. The document clearly explains the plans for developing the Climate and Environment department, launched by Wyborcza.pl in February 2021, in order to publish more often than before what is happening both in Poland and in the world in terms of ecology and climate. It is also worth mentioning that as part of environmental activities, in March 2021, Gazeta Wyborcza prepared a special digital subscription offer, the entire income of which was donated to the Dzika Polska Foundation to support the Ambulance for Trees project. By the end of December 2021, it managed to collect over PLN 93 thousand, which were allocated, among others, for arboriculture activities, protection of tree stands and court cases related to tree felling.

The issue of the natural environment and the climate crisis also had a key place in the Gazeta.pl editorial declaration for 2021, which was manifested in numerous green initiatives of the portal team, e.g. in the #Ekośledztwa series.

 A spectacular culmination of ecological activities was the action of Gazeta.pl Alarm for the climate carried out with the Climate Coalition before COP26 – alarm sirens wailed in all Polish cities, which was to emphasize the importance of this event.

In order to further act for the climate, in 2021 Gazeta.pl started cooperation with the University of Adam Mickiewicz to conduct education related to the protection of the environment. Thanks to this partnership, a dedicated section was be created on the Zielona.gazeta.pl website, where original materials are published as part of the Klimat z bliska campaign. Last year, Gazeta.pl was one of the 460 partners of Covering Climate Now (CCNow) – a global initiative aimed at improving the quality of reporting on the climate crisis in the media around the world. Since 2019 Gazeta Wyborcza has also been an affiliate of CCNow. Apart from these two Agora's media, only two editorial offices belong to the representatives of Poland in the initiative.


On the other hand, AMS undertakes a number of pro-ecological activities, including introducing environmentally friendly OOH panels. In 2021 ECO Backlight joined the portfolio of pro-environmental solutions offered by AMS to clients. It is a set of pro-ecological solutions, which include: energy-saving LED lighting, reducing light smog by switching off the lighting and ecologically certified printing of advertising materials.
